Rolfing is a relatively new form of therapy founded in 1971 by Ida Pauline Rolf. The basic principles involve working with gravity to realign the fascia in order guide the body into self-healing.
All muscles have an opposite so that the body can move in a number of directions. However, due to trauma, strain or other injuries the fascia on one side may adhere too closely to the muscles they cover, leading to restrictions in mobility and pain. Rolfing is a whole body approach where the therapist realigns your whole body into its natural position. The treatment may take several sessions as over the years the body is slowly shifted out of alignment by daily activities.
